GIST

GIST (Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor) is a rare cancer attacking the digestive tract (or surrounding areas of the abdomen) of  between 3,000 to 5,000 people annually in the United States. For more information on GIST we recommend visiting the websites of the following organizations:

The Life Raft Group - founded in 2000 by Norman Scherzer (whose wife Anita has GIST) when a handful of GIST patients in early clinical trials began sharing their experiences online. That online community was officially incorporated in 2002 as the Life Raft Group. It's three-fold focus encompasses research, patient support and education, and patient advocacy.

GIST Support International -  founded in 2002 by GIST patients Marina Symcox, Lee Ann Lamb and others as an all-volunteer, non-profit organization reaching out to GIST patients and their family and friends to provide education and support.

GIST Cancer Research Fund - founded in 2001 by Tania Stutman (a GIST patient) and her husband Robert. GCRF's  primary focus, as its name states, is to raise funding for continued  GIST research aimed at developing life-saving therapies and methods of early detection.
